Last few days in Arillas

Day 89 – Friday 27.6.14

It was 26 deg by 10am – I spent the morning writing my blog.

We decided to go to 'Effies' – Eftihia  (EXYTHIA it means happiness ) for lunch as we have not been, up to now this visit. I always have the same meal – Grilled prawns with extra garlic – as recommended to me by Phil Poffley a few years ago. I think I died and went to heaven – they were just as delicious as always.

Effie came out to say hello, she is pregnant, due to have a baby girl at the beginning of September. She is keeping very well and had just come back from Corfu town where  she was buying some bigger clothes as nothing fits her now.

Phil and I spent a lovely couple of hours in the dappled shade, (30 deg outside)  reminiscing about this trip and previous holidays. The main pleasure for me is seeing how relaxed and well Phil is! It is just over a year since his heart bypass operation. I am so pleased we got to live our dream! I was doubting it when I saw him in intensive care last June.

Arillas sure is getting busy now and very hot!

This evening we walked down to the front. On the way we stopped to have a chat to Clare who is now working in the Silver Moon shop, she is loving it.

Then we went to Portofino for a Meze. It was very windy so not as hot as it has been but still humid. Spiros was very stressed as he had had a visit from the police, right at his busiest time, when the restaurant was full. They wanted to check all his paperwork, which was all in good order except for one form which  he has to get from his book keeper. The police have visited most business premises today. They are looking for people who are avoiding paying tax.

We called in the Coconut for a nightcap and had a chat to Yiota.

I asked Kostas if we would be seeing Hannah and baby before we left and he told me that the Greeks have a tradition that they do not go out for 40 days. So we will have to wait until our next visit to see them  both. I gave him our present for baby. I had it made in England before we came to Greece – so it is well travelled.

I was curious about this 40 day tradition, so I looked it up and found that:-

The Greeks are very superstitious and believe a lot in religion but also in supernatural or paranormal phenomenon. Traditions and superstitions vary from island to island, from villages to villages and from region to region. In the past, it was believed that the new mother was the source of jealousy and must avoid the “evil eye” (???? ????, kako mati) Therefore, she was never seen in public for forty days. After this period, she would take her baby to the church, the baby was blessed by the priest, and they could both start going out.

Day 90 – Saturday 28.6.14

I spent the morning packing and sorting things out for our trip home. Poppy only had a short walk this morning. It was 26 deg by 2pm and the humidity was 73%. I still have swollen feet and laid on the bed with them elevated. The inevitable happened – I fell asleep.
We went to Quattro in San Stef tonight – again. It is a new this year, Italian restaurant that specialises in hand made pasta. The  four friends are very efficient and friendly, they truly deserve to do well. Michaela told us that up to now, it has exceeded their expectations, I hope it carries on for them.  If you can possibly get there it is well worth a visit – the food is gorgeous. I had Bruschetta for starters, then Pasta with tiger prawns
and Phil had garlic bread, and a to die for steak
followed by Chocolate mousse.
Including house wine the bill was less than 40 euros – so not too expensive for such wonderful food.
We had a stroll up to Hippopots to have a chat with Jackie and Pete before driving back to Arillas. They do some wonderful pottery.         www.hippopots.com       I ordered a couple of special items to take home with us. Jackie is going to rush them through for me as we need to collect them on Monday evening.
Another very memorable evening.

Day 91 – Sunday 29.6.14

Another hot one today – 27 deg at 1pm.  30 deg at 3pm and 84% humidity.
We went to Brouklis to see Dimitri this afternoon, we were the only people there, apart from Dr. Yannis. The four of us had a good chat about various things including dogs on the beach. It seems that the notice on the beach is not enforceable. The council will be having meetings to discuss the matter and the wording may change – to something like, dogs on leash, keep dogs under control, pick up after your dog – there are various options.

So we took Poppy for a last swim of this holiday down by the jetty.

Yannis, Vasso, Harris and Alexandra, our landlord and his family all came to say goodbye to us, we paid a deposit to book the apartment for April, May, and June 2015. Looks like we will be doing it all again – all being well.
We had a snack in Sharon's pool bar and said goodbye to everyone. This evening we packed some things into the campervan then went to Brouklis for dinner. Bifteki again for me, one of my favourite meals. Called in at the Marvel for a nightcap and to confirm that we will be wanting a room for tomorrow night as we have to vacate the apartment. We watched Greece loose their football match to Costa Rica.

Day 92 – Monday 30.6.14

This morning we packed all the rest of our stuff in the van. We went to the Marvel to check in and have lunch. We drove to Roda to the vets to get Poppy's passport stamp and for her worming tablet. Matoula the vet is so lovely, she checked Poppy's microchip, and signed the passport saying she is fit and well to travel. A painless payment of €26.
We filled the van with Diesel, checked the tyre pressures etc. Then we drove to San Stef to collect my items from Jackie and Pete at Hippopots and say goodbye.. We drove down to the port to have a last look, then on to Armourada for a last drink with Leon and Billy. We met some more Arillas.com forum members who, all came to say they are enjoying the blog. Said goodbye to Clare in the Silver Moon shop.

We drove down to the front hoping to get a photo of our last Arillas sunset of this trip, but we just missed it. Back to the Marvel for a shower, then a Meze with wine and off to bed. It has been a long, busy and emotional day.

Day 93 – Tuesday 01.7.14        Leaving day!

We had a leisurely coffee on our balcony when we woke, reflecting about this trip and how amazing it has been.

We had brunch before setting off. Just as we were leaving I had a message from Yiota saying she had made Cheese pies for our journey, what a lovely thoughtful gesture! Yiota and all the like minded locals are the reason we keep returning to our little bit of paradise.
We said our goodbyes to Sophia, Kostas and Spiros at the Marvel, drove down to Yiotas to collect the pie, said another goodbye to Sharon then set off from Arillas on the journey home.

Last view of the beautiful clear blue sky.

The Twelfth Week

Day 82 – Friday 20.6.14

Lovely sunny, hot day after the storms Dot  packed her bag this morning. We drove to Sheila and Keiths house for a late lunch.

It was a lovely, long relaxing lunch, with great views and chat.

I saw the most beautiful Swallowtail butterfly in the garden.

We left Dot at Sheilas and drove back to Arillas. We have to see her before she flies out as she has accidentally left her passport and ticket here.

Day 83 – Saturday 21.6.14

Lazy morning again, we went to Sharon's for lunch. Had a chat with Kevin and Kay. Phil and I went swimming in the sea and sunbathed, we left Poppy at home as we didn't want to torment her with not being able to swim yet. We went to the Marvel for dinner and had a game of darts with Spiros. We met some more people who are enjoying reading this blog – still amazed at how many people read it.

Day 84 – Sunday 22.6.14

21 deg at 9am – not a cloud in the sky! Dot called for her passport. I did some housework and washing – getting some things sorted for going home. I also did an online shop from Tesco for the day we return home. Phil went over to the Marvel to watch the Grand Prix. I spent the afternoon reading. It was still 30 deg at 6pm. We went to Brouklis for a meal tonight – spit roast chicken – it was delicious. then we walked down to meet Terry and Helen Warner and had a drink with them in the Acti – it was great to meet them at long last, we have been friends on the Forum and Facebook for years. They only had one drink and retired to bed at the Horizon as they had been up since 6am yesterday morning. We popped into the Coconut for a nightcap.

Day 85 – Monday 23.6.14

Today we drove south to Moraitika to meet up with our Danish friend Connie, who has lived there for the last 3 years. We went to her house for a glass of wine and then parked the campervan up for the night, as we stayed over in it. We walked down to the beach, Poppy had a lovely swim and a cool off.

Connie and I walking to the beach

Happy Poppy
Then we walked up to Connie's favourite restaurant Edesma Taverna for a meal. We had been there two years ago when we visited with Sue and Dave.
We were joined by Connie's friend Scarlett – she is such a lovely, bubbly person and very comical.

We had a long leisurely meal with lots of wine and chat. Then we walked back to the van, Connie went home and we took Poppy for a quick run before we all settled down for the night.

Day 86 – Tuesday 24.6.14

We parked up for the night next to a supermarket, behind it there was a gated courtyard with some kittens in it, they were that tiny that they could squeeze through the rails and came running over to us – hoping to be fed. We picked Connie up and drove further South to Lake Korission. I was hoping the flamingoes would be there but it must be the wrong time of the year.

We stopped off at a beach bar and had a cooling drink, I am getting to like Iced coffee, very much. Poppy had a run and a swim in the sea.

This is the view we were looking out at.

Then we went to a traditional taverna for lunch, the lady, who I think was the cook as well as the waiter spoke very little English. .

While I went to the loo Phil ordered some wine, we all wanted white but apparently she said no only red – and pointed to the red square  on the checked tablecloth,  but she made a point of telling him that it was not from a supermarket, she had made it herself from her own grapes. Therefore the tablecloth depicts red, white and rose according to Phil.

The menu was very limited and was mainly in Greek, but there were a few English words added, like fish and chicken.  Connie opted for fish and Phil and I had Greek salad, tzatziki and bread.  It was all very tasty.

We were lovely and cool, sitting in the shade of the
olive trees with a beautiful view of the lake.

We dropped Connie off and made our way North, stopping off at Pontikonisi Cafe for an ice cream. We watched planes taking off and landing over Pontikonisi Island or Mouse Island as it is more commonly known.

We watched people swimming down below in the crystal clear water,

also a yacht trying to sail, but just drifting about as there was no wind.

An idyllic spot to spend a couple of hours!

'Pontikonisi Island is situated just south of Corfu town near the resort of Perama and Kanoni, it is a small island which houses the Byzantine church of Pantokrator, which was built in the 11th or 12th century. The Byzantine chapel that is on the top of the island encloses the memorial tablets of Elizabeth Empress of Austria and Rodolfo archduke.
Pontikonisi Island means ‘Mouse Island’ in Greek and it is from this that it gets it more famous name and viewed from afar the island gives the impression of a mouse. According to Greek legend the boat of Odysseus was turned into this island by Poseidon.
You can reach the island by a small boat in the summer month, which leaves from the small port opposite but you should be aware that you will not be allowed to walk around the island or the church. The only day of the year the church is open to visitors is on August 6th, which is a celebration day called ‘The Transfiguration of Jesus’ and pilgrims are taken to the island.'

We made our way North, back to Arillas for a snooze and shower, then out for a pizza and a nightcap at the Marvel. We watched Greece win their football match against The Ivory Coast. There were certainly some happy Greeks tonight.

Day 87 – Wednesday 25.6.14

We had some visitors this morning, Steve and Carol, they have been reading this blog and came to introduce themselves, they also said they are thinking of bringing their campervan over next year. They had a look round our apartment and said they would like to rent it next year. We are hoping to come back April, May and June and they would like it July, August and September.

The aircon on Mercy (campervan) has given up the ghost,  we decided to take her into the garage this morning. The mechanic was a lovely. helpful man, who tested it and found out we have a hole in one of the pipes, he said it would have to have the engine stripped down and the pipe go to Corfu town to be mended. We decided not to do it – in case it took too long, we have read the book, Avrio never comes by John Waller – and bearing in mind we are leaving next Tuesday, we dare not risk it. We had a lazy afternoon, the temperature was around 34 deg, lunch at the Marvel and then back to the apartment for a snooze and a read. We stayed in tonight and had beans on toast as we have had a hectic few days and the heat is beginning to take it's toll on us. It was still 28 deg outside at 7pm.

Day 88 – Thursday 26.6.14

I have been a busy bee, washing clothes, packing some things away and tidying up. Trouble is it looks messy now as I have little piles of things all over ready to be packed away in Mercy.
It was very cloudy today, I don't think we saw the sun at all, Hot and humid all day. We drove down to San Stefanos – Phil bought a new pair of beach shoes, then we went to Waves taverna for lunch, after which Poppy had a swim in the sea. Snoozing and reading this afternoon.  We stayed in again tonight – I made a chicken pizza – we are trying to use all the bits in the freezer.

We are just about to spend our last four days on Corfu – we leave on Tuesday for the journey home. I will  publish a blog on Tuesday if I get chance. Then we will be on the road until Sunday 6th July.

The Eleventh Week

Day 75 – Friday 13.6.14

27 deg at 11am   30 deg at 5pm.
A friend has posted on Facebook, some Stoneart they have done on the beach – I think they are lovely.

Today we all went up to Bardis Sun Studios for Lunch. At last Larissa has met Bobby and George – I hoped they would want to marry my granddaughters years ago – seems it is not to be. Bobby has married the beautiful Katerina – so that only leaves George now – so still hopeful! Then we had a drive up to the Night Owl. We only had icecreams but the girls met Linda and loved all the owls and especially the baby swallows in their nests.

Emma at Night owl
Lila at Night owl

Swallows at Night owl
every time the parents
flew in, 5 heads popped
up and 5 little beaks opened

Then we went down to Sharons for the girls to have a swim – we sat with a glass of wine and watched the world go by. It was 30 deg in the shade at 5pm. This evening I dropped the girls off in Sidari and we came back and had a delicious Bifteki in Armourada.

Armourada looking pretty

Apparently the girls had a good night, they had a nice meal and then went round some bars – drinking cocktails and having a good laugh. They got a taxi back at 6am. Oh to be young again!

Day 76 – Saturday 14.6.14

Dot and I drove to Sidari to get her prescription made up – she has high blood pressure according to Dr. Yannis. The girls slept in this morning, then got up and went down to the beach to meet some friends. Phil, Dot and I decided to go over to San Stefanos beach to see if dogs were allowed. We didn't see any signs – as soon as we opened the back door, Poppy took off for a swim. She found a stick and had a good play. Then we sat in The Waves taverna – right on the beach – for our lunch. It was a lovely meal and the view was great. The bonus was Poppy being able to swim – sorry Arillas but you are loosing out on our custom during the day. There is a webcam viewing the beach, sited on top of Waves Taverna.

 http://corfu-info.com/main/webcam.html

Tonight we went for a Pizza with the girls at Pizza Lithero – delicious food once again, they made friends with Dimitri the waiter and Vas the chef. Then we went to the Coconut for a nightcap, and met up with Grace and Chris.

Dot, Phil and I left the girls to watch the England match which started at 1am Greek time.

Day 77 – Sunday 15.6.14

We all decided to go to San Stefanos today – same place for lunch and we all went swimming – it was a fabulous day.
Tonight we walked down to Thalassa for the last supper with the girls – gorgeous meal again, I had my usual Fillets of Sole with an Ouzo and cream sauce, with mashed potato. Larissa had Grilled Octopus for her starter and really enjoyed it.

Think she likes it!
Getting stuck in!

Then we popped into Portofino for the girls to say goodbye to Spiros and Spiros the waiter. We left the girls at the Coconut and walked home.

Day 78 – Monday 16.6.14

Dot went to Portofino to have breakfast with her friends who go home today.

Then we went to Brouklis for lunch and had a good chat to Dimitris. We saw his new kittens too.

I walked down to retrieve Larissa and Emma off the beach – they had had a swim and were asleep on sunbeds – serves them right for staying up so late lol. I met Kevin and Dawn Gable while I was down there, they are staying in one of the apartments at the poolbar – nice spot.  The girls went back to the Marvel  to finish their packing as they leave at 6pm. They have had a good holiday – even with us oldies in tow some of the time, but Larissa says her grandparents are 'cool' – and say they are definitely returning next year. It is always difficult when you tell someone how good a place is – you just hope they like it as much as you. It certainly seems that we have two new Arillas Addicts! Phil, Dot and I stayed in tonight and had a simple meal with salad. We have eaten out every night with the girls and are fed up of getting glammed up – we had a lazy night.

Day 79 – Tuesday 17.6.14

This morning Dot went off with her friend Brenda to have a breakfast which they won in a quiz last week. Phil and I took Poppy to the vets in Roda as she has some bites on her leg, and has licked it raw. Another injection, antibiotics and a spray for her. Another 50 euros – good job we love her. No swimming for the next 10 days! Poor Poppy she has such a sensitive skin, a bit like me actually. I always have a bad reaction to mossy bites and any jewelry that has nickel in it. We stopped off for lunch halfway between Roda and Sidari. It was really high up with a tiny view of the sea, their flowers were very healthy and cared for.

Then went shopping for some coffee and dog food. There has been quite a change in the weather today, rain in the night, cloudy all day and cool. Tonight we drove up to the Night Owl, we took Chris and Grace as they have never been. The food was delicious again, Dot and Chris both had the biggest Pork Chops I have ever seen.  We came home after the meal as I had a migraine.

Day 80 – Wednesday 18.6.14

We all went up to Gravia for lunch today, it was very hot with a lovely cooling breeze. It is a few years since we have been here, there are new owners running it and they have made some improvements, especially the bar which runs the full length of the cafe – a great place to watch people walking the donkey path between Arillas and San Stefanos, they look like dwarfs, it was funny to see an umbrella bouncing along being used as a sun shade.

This evening we went to the Rainbow for a fun darts match – nothing serious and no finishing on a double. It was a real good laugh.
Day 81 – Thursday 19.6.14

Dot went off early with friends. They drove to Corfu port and then took a boat to visit Island Vidos. It is a small island just off the coast of Corfu – less than one kilometer in diameter.
According to the history of the island:-
During the First World War, the island of Corfu served as an island hospital and quarantine for sick Serbian soldiers following the epic retreat of the Serbian army and part of the civilian population through Montenegro and Albania in 1915 following the Austro-German-Bulgarian invasion of Serbia (see Serbian Campaign (World War I)). While the main camps of the recuperating army were on Corfu itself (a contingent was sent to Bizerte as well, and many of the civilian refugees were accepted by France), the sick and near-dying, mostly soldiers, were treated on Vido to prevent epidemics. In spite of Allied material help, the conditions of both the improvised medical facilities and many of the patients on the island resulted in a high fatality rate. Due to small area of the island and its rocky soil, it soon became necessary to bury the dead in the sea (by weighting the corpses with rocks to prevent them from floating). Over 5,000 people were buried at sea near the island of Vido.
A monument of gratitude to the Greek nation was erected at Vido by Serbs in the 1930s.
The waters around Vido island are sometimes referred to as the Blue Sea Tomb
Dot enjoyed her day – we went over to the Marvel for lunch. At 6.30pm there was a storm, very heavy rain and thunder. We walked down to Portofino for Dot's last supper with us as she is going to stay with Sheila and Keith for her last 4 days before she returns to the UK. We went into the Coconut to watch England loose, and to say goodbye to Chris and Grace as they go home tomorrow. Kostas was there as Hannah and baby are home now – it was a bit noisy to have a good chat to him – hope to see him/them soon. While we were walking up the hill it started thundering and lightening – we just got in and Dot made a hasty retreat to the campervan before the heavens opened. The storm went on until 4am.
The end of the eleventh week, it is speeding by now – only just over a week to go before we start our journey back home. 150 days without a cig for me, I am so proud of myself, especially when I am around people who are smoking.

The Tenth Week

Day 68 – Friday 6.6.14

22.3 deg at Midday – 28 deg at 2pm. Lynne called to say goodbye as they are going home today – poor Gary is still not well and she is hoping he is not sick at the airport before they board the plane.  Dot took Poppy for a walk this morning but by the time she got to Brouklis – Poppy had had three squats and it wasn't wee. So she had to bring her home, hopefully now she has had a clear out she will feel better. Still very lethargic, but drinking plenty.
We drove over to San Stefanos to a restaurant Bill and Dot used to visit quite a bit called '2 Star'. Yannis the owner is a lovely man, we had a nice lunch. Then we went for a wander round and visited 'Hippopots' they have some very unusual items in there – I am looking forward to making something to take home. We called in at a swish handbag shop to say hello to an English girl who works in there, she went to the same university as Dot's grandson – they had a good catchup.

George and Dot

On the way back to Arillas we called in to see George, he was Dot's landlord when she had the apartment under his. We invited him to join us for dinner at Portofino tonight. He was in the Merchant Navy, so he and Phil have a lot in common.

View from the balcony

We called at the Marvel to say goodbye to Joy and Cliff they are going home tonight then we walked down to Portofino. On the way were stopped by a lady called Ann, to say how much she is enjoying reading the blog – thanks for taking the time to say hello – we are amazed how many people have done this – complete strangers saying they are reading the blog.  We had a great evening, George is such an interesting guy – was great for Phil to reminisce about all the places they have sailed to. George has even been to Grimsby and Immingham.

Dot, Me, Grace, Chris and Phil

We called into the Coconut for a drink and had a chat to Grace and Chris who arrived today. Was great to meet them at long last. I also met Glenda Routledge and her hubby for the first time, sat in Geordie corner.

Day 69 – Saturday 7.6.14

Our beautiful grand daughter, Emily is 9 years old today. I was really organised before I left home, I sent her card and money.

It is a hot one today – 25 deg at 11am. 28 deg by 1pm . We went down to Sharons for lunch, and for Poppy to have a swim. There was a lovely breeze so it wasn't too hot. Grace came and had a drink with us and a chat.

We went to Kostas on the beach for our meal tonight it was delicious. I mentioned in an earlier blog about the bench on the jetty and how it came about – this is written on their menu:-

Learn a little Greek

Day 70 – Sunday 8.6.14

Dot took Poppy for a walk down the front and for her swim this morning. Then we all went to Rainbow for a full English breakfast. Dot went to watch the Tennis this afternoon, Phil and I had a lazy afternoon reading, the temperature was 31 deg at 3pm I laid on the bed in the cool as my feet are swollen again. Dot went out to dinner with friends. We ate at home and then Phil went to the Marvel to watch the Grand Prix from Canada tonight. It was still 26 deg at 11pm.

This is the forecast for next week!

Day 71 – Monday 9.6.14

Dot took Poppy for a swim first thing. Then Dot and I went to Sidari to the pharmacy only to find it is a Bank holiday and it was closed. We did manage to get some presents for Spiros 60th birthday on Wednesday though. When we came back we walked down to the front, had a snack in Sharons then went in the sea for a swim. After our meal, Phil and I went over to meet our grand daughter Larissa and her friend Emma who arrived tonight. After they had settled into their room, they came to say hello to Poppy then we all walked down to the front. We had one drink in Portofino, then moved on to the Coconut.

A friend who lives in Arillas said tonight's sunset was the most spectacular she has seen in all the years she has lived here.

Day 72 – Tuesday 10.6.14

25 deg at 10am. Larissa and Emma went down to the beach and had a swim. We all went to Seamonkeys in Sidari for lunch, after calling at the pharmacy. The girls and I went for a swim, then spent a pleasant afternoon watching the world go by. Poppy loves it there as Andy and Fiona's dog Toffee has lots of toys which she shares. I think Poppy overdid all the running and swimming today as she is limping a bit. We came home, for showers etc. then Dot went off with some friends to a Quiz – their team won. The girls, Phil and I had a meal in the Marvel, then walked down to listen to the band in the Coconut. While we were there we learned that Hannah had a baby girl at 10am. this morning. I am so pleased for them as they have been trying for about 15 years.

We met Christine and Steve in there, they asked us to go to Portofino as the staff were giving Spiros his birthday cake at midnight. It was a good laugh – he liked his cake with a naked lady on it.

It was really hot tonight – first time we have needed the aircon on. There was also another beautiful sunset.

Day 73 – Wednesday 11.6.14

22 deg this morning and 28 deg by 2pm.  Leisurely morning for us and then Quiz at Sharons this afternoon. Was good fun but we were rubbish. We took Poppy swimming but were told by Pedros that 'dogs on the beach are not allowed' apparently it is the law and the police are now patrolling and fining people 500€. We are very upset about this as she has been on the beach almost every day since the beginning of April. She does not run amok like some of the stray dogs, and on the two occasions she has 'been' on the beach we have picked up.
We went to Portofino for a meal tonight and to give Spiro his cards and presents – he loved his T-shirt – and wore it straight away. Great evening! There were 18 of us altogether including, Dot, Larissa, Emma, George, Christine, and Steve.

Another Cake everyone gets a 69th
cake at Portofino
New T shirt
Laissa, George
and Emma
Larissa, Spiros the waiter and Emma

Day 74 – Thursday 12.6.14

We all went to Akrotiri for lunch today – we just love the food there, and the amazing view. It was 30 deg this afternoon.

At 4pm the girls went off on a coach with Dot to explore Corfu town. We stayed in and had a siesta. Another day another birthday, we went to Vinceremo this evening as our friend Brenda was celebrating her birthday there. Phil and I had a lovely Meze, then the girls joined us when they got back from Corfu. We moved on to the Coconut for just one drink. We left Larissa and Emma in there with Brenda's son Jody.

Another week over – time is going so quickly now!

The Ninth week.

Day 61 – Friday 30.5.14

Lovely day after last night's rain. Went to the Marvel to meet Lee Clements and his wife and children, they loved Poppy.

We had a photo taken in memory of Steven Sutton. His family requested that people gave him a thumbs up during his vigil.

We went down to the beach for Poppy to have a swim, we sat and had a drink at Sharons Phil had his new drink of choice – Local Ginger beer.

Then we went back to the Marvel to say goodbye to Gill and Nigel. We sat and had a chat with Lynne, Gary, Joy and Cliff. They went off to go to eat – we came home and had homemade Chicken curry. Relaxing evening and early to bed for me.

Day 62 – Saturday 30.5.14

We went to the beach Poppy had a  swim with her lovely new stick.

Then we visited Sharons for lunch, we were joined by Joan, John, Lynne and Gary. Spent a lovely couple of hours chatting and people watching. Janis called by briefly after her walk up to Akrotiri. We met her lovely daughter Rachel and family, Poppy loved the boys as they played with her.

This afternoon in the Coconut Perry's daughter Katerina and her dancing class friends gave a show – we missed it, but we did see them practicing one afternoon last week.

When we got back to the apartment Vasso was cleaning, so we had to go over to the Marvel for a drink – it's a hard life. This evening – The Worried Men were playing at Armourada. We went with Joy, Cliff, Lynne and Gary  – we had such a laugh. I was telling them about Leon drawing the size of the Saganaki on the tablecloth so we all started writing – there must have been about 20 silly comments written on it.

Day 63 – Sunday 1.6.14

20deg at 10am. It is 131 days today since I had a cigarette – well done me! I walked down to the Mirage to meet Christine and Bob. They had just arrived and she had brought Poppy some of her home made dog biscuits yum yum. I took Poppy for a swim while Phil watched the Rugby. This evening we went for a meal with Lynne, Gary, Joy and Cliff, to the new Quattro restaurant in San Stefanos NW – the food was superb and very reasonably priced. It is run by four friends, the chef makes all their pasta. The Tiramisu was home made – and to die for.  We could not fault anything, everything was excellent – food, wine, presentation and friendly, attentive but discreet staff. Will certainly be going back.

Tiramisu
Wine

There were some amazing cloud formations tonight.

Day 64 – Monday 2.6.14

20 deg this morning – temperature is pretty consistent now. Had a lazy morning, Joy came for coffee and we had a good chat. We went to the Rainbow and met up with Paul and Denise (from the Grosvenor in Cleethorpes). We also met Marie Crawford and her husband – what a small world it is – they live in the same street that we did in Southampton 33 years ago. Then we walked down to meet up with Janice and her family as they are leaving today. Her grandsons took Poppy on the beach – she had a wonderful time. Also Joan and John are going home today.

5 Ladies having a lazy afternoon

Lynne and Gary bought Poppy a squeaky, light up ball. Think she was a bit miffed when I made her sit for the photo.

We walked back up and decided to stay in tonight – we had a Pizza delivered, and it was delicious. There was an amazing sunset tonight.

Day 65 – Tuesday 3.6.14

22.8 deg at 12 o'clock.

We have a White Oleander tree outside the kitchen window, the perfume wafting in is gorgeous. I didn't know it is very poisonous to humans and animals.

. I have taken some more photos in our garden – can you remember the tiny pomegranate from when we first came – well this is it now.

We have the most beautiful rose arch leading into the garden. It has very small double flowers on it – I think I will try to take a cutting from it

Poppy is not too well today so we stayed in. She didn't eat her dinner and is lethargic.

Tonight's unusual sunset – a straight line of clouds.

Portofino for dinner tonight and then called in at Coconut for 'just the one' – as if! The Splinter Band were playing again.

Day 66 –  Wednesday 4.6.14

One year ago today since Phil had his heart by-pass. So pleased we have been able to make this journey.

Gorgeous hot, sunny day to welcome Dot – she is staying with us. Our friends Sheila and Keith picked her up from the airport. I did lunch for us when they got here. Then we walked down to the beach for Poppy to have a swim and for Dot to say hello to some friends. We stopped for a fresh orange juice in Ammos. Then back home for Dot to have a siesta as she has been up since 6am yesterday morning.

A few words about the Arillas community spirit
(and why we keep coming back)   (Taken from www.arillas.com)

The Arillas Business Association together with the local Councillors and people of Arillas have achieved to have the beach-front and the rest of the village in a good state before the season started .
In the winter months meetings and small conferences were taking place in order to keep everyone informed and able to contribute with their own opinions and ideas.
Having taken seriously under consideration the results of the Arillas Survey form 2012-13, we followed the rule to improve but not spoil our Arillas by choosing  carefully all actions and necessary developments.
The community spirit within the Arillas business-people is a vital fact that has to be kept going for the next years.
The work that this year has been done by the business-owners is:
Repairing and improving the look of the beach-front lights.
Creation of a wooden pedestrian at the left part of the beach-street.
Tiding up some of the private and public signs in order to give a good example of how signs should be.
Creation of more rubbish-bin-housings.
Planting more native trees, flowers and plants at the beach front. (These trees used to grow naturaly in Arillas beach before the hotels and bars where build.)
Creation and placement of 10 wooden small litter bins  at the beach that the business owners of the front would be caring for them.
Repairing the surface of the pier.
Repairing the beach Showers.
Maintenance of the Arillas trail.
All these actions have been initiated by the community spirit of the Arillas people who live and work in this area. It was the ultimate move to respond to the loyalty of all of you that keep coming year by year and to welcome the newcomers with respect.
We are trying to keep your holiday destination clean and tidy with our basic resources and very little help from the governmental services. I must say It WAS NOT EASY….
It is important that more and more local business-owners should take part in this actions in the future. Our aim is to keep Arillas  AS IT IS .
The identity of our Arillas as a holiday destination is based on :
Our natural environment
The sea and sun
Family-run accommodation
Quality restaurants and good Greek food
Quality of the beach
High rate of repeating visitors
The hospitality of the local people
Beach quality
Recommendation from friends and family
The use of social media
The organisation of local events.
In order to keep this spirit going, it would be very nice of you to keep mentioning to every establishment that you visit in Arillas and the surrounding areas about the good impact that these initiatives have to your holidays.
Have a good time in Arillas!

Tonight we decided to stay home and have a pizza delivered, lots of wine, chatting and looking at photos.

Day 67 – Thursday 5.6.14

21.3 deg at Midday – We walked down to the beach, stopping to chat to Dimitri, Dr. Yanni,  everyone at Armourada including Verena and baby Angelos.and Yiota in her shop. Then we went to Portofino and had a drink with Spiros, while we were there Gary and Lynne arrived to say goodbye to Spiros as they go home tomorrow. Also Christine, Steve and friends came as they had just arrived. Poppy went for her swim and then we joined the 4 o'clock club at Sharons. I sat with Tracey and we chatted about our journey and her bringing her dog out at some point.

Tonight we went to Thalassa with Joy and Cliff for their last supper. Then one drink in Portofino, one drink in the Coconut.

Dot's 'apartment' she is loving her bed in the campervan. She says she is sleeping better and for longer than she does at home.

The end of another beautiful week – where does the time go?

The Eighth Week

Day 54 – Friday 23.5.14

We were late up today as we didn't go to bed until 4am.

We drove to Sidari for lunch. Our friends Andy and Fiona own the beach bar Seamonkeys, it is a beautiful location and Poppy went for a swim – I wished I had put my cossie on as the water looked so inviting. Andy has said that we can park the campervan on their grass next to the bar one night and stay over – sounds like a plan!

Phil was delighted to find a Pukka Steak and Kidney pie on the menu. Not traditional Greek food, but he has not had one for three months.

We came back to the Marvel to say goodbye to Kes, Kath, Paul, Tracey and Arthur as they are all leaving tonight. Lynne and Gary arrived and we had a lovely chat with them. 21.1 deg at 9pm. Early night tonight!

Day 55 – Saturday 24.5.14

I took Poppy to the beach for a swim, booked a table for the Greek night tonight and said goodbye to Anne Byrne who is going home today. We went to the Marvel for lunch and to welcome Gill and Nigel who arrived this afternoon. Today has been hot and sunny, after a cloudy start.

Tonight we went to the Marina for the Greek night with Gill and Nigel. We saw our friends, Wendy, Stuart, Janis, Charlotte, Darrell and Izzy there too.

The dancing was fantastic and tonight was Telis son's first night of dancing in public – he is a star in the making and I am sure he will be as good a dancer as his father before too long.

 I had Garlic prawns.

Gill and I Doing what we do best!

We called at the Nut on the way up and had a lovely chat with Joan and John. Then back to the Marvel to say goodnight to Ann, John, Gill, Nigel and Kostas. It was 20deg at 9pm.

Day 56 – Sunday 25.5.14

It was 20deg at 9am. We went over to the Marvel for a late breakfast so Phil would be there to watch the Monaco Grand Prix. Our friends (who we met in Italy) messaged us to say they were coming to see us. Terry stayed with Phil to watch the Grand Prix and Loretta and I walked to the beach with Poppy. She loved throwing the stick into the sea for Poppy. Then we went over to the Pool Bar for 4 o'clock drinks.
We all went to Brouklis Taverna tonight the fellers had Spit Roast Lamb as Terry has been wanting this since April. I had Pumpkin pie and Loretta had a lovely white fish with a lemon sauce. We were so busy chatting we forgot to take photos.     21 deg at 9pm.

Day 57 – Monday 26.5.14

Still 21 deg at 9am. We took Lynne and Gary to Sidari with us and went for lunch to Seamonkeys again.

Andy had just got back from Athens, where he had been for the Greek open darts championship and he and his partner won the Doubles. Here he is with his trophy.

Lynne and Gary went off walking, Poppy had a swim and then we came back to Arillas after buying some flowers. We went to the 4 o'clock club and Poppy had another swim. More friends Peter and Tracey arrived today.

Our friends Joy and Cliff arrive tonight, it was their second wedding anniversary yesterday and Cliff had asked me to get some roses for her, for when they arrive.

Two more friends Karen and Ian arrived today – on their 30th Wedding anniversary. Karen loves writing in the sand so we did this for them. It took several attempts as Poppy kept walking over it – you can just see her paw prints, bottom right, I think she wanted to sign it!

This evening we said goodbye to our lovely neighbours Ann and John, then we walked down to have a drink with Karen and Ian to toast their anniversary. Then back to the Marvel to wait for Joy and Cliff. It was lovely to see them as we had not seen them since last summer when they came to stay with us in Grimsby for a weekend.

Day 58 – Tuesday 27.5.14

Gorgeous sunshine today 20 deg at 9am. Today is our friend Gary's 60th birthday! He wanted to keep it hush hush and no one to know. Well with a wife like Lynne and friends like us – that was never going to happen. We had a normal day, walking and swimming for Poppy, chatting and vino for us.

Then we went to the Marvel for Gary's surprise party!

Kostas arranged for Gary's cake – it had a naked lady on it! He loved it as you can see,

We went to the Coconut after the Party as there was a live band on.

Gary had a flashing 60 badge but was too embarrassed to wear it so I wore it for him. I was quite flattered really as people thought it was my 60th – I wish!

Our lovely friends Lynne and Gary

We danced the night away!

Day 59 – Wednesday 28.5.14

20 deg at 9am. Lovely and sunny today.

We went down to the beach Poppy had a swim and play with Gill.

Then we went for lunch and another Quiz at Sharon's pool bar. This week they raised over 100
euros for the Animal charity.

It was a good turnout. The Quizmaster was Dave Smith again, he did an excellent job – even if he was pedantic!

Tonight Phil and I went to Armourada for a friendly Darts knock out. I did rather well even if I do say it myself. I think they were all impressed – I got through to the final, might be because I had a good partner in Pete. While we were there I had the most amazing Moussaka, it is the best one I have ever tasted.

Day 60 Thursday 29.5.14

'Today the 29th of May there will be this year’s first  festival in Arillas.
It takes place near the local Church and old school of Arillas village which is about one and a half km from the beach on the way to Magoulades on the main road.
The local church is dedicated to the The Ascension of Jesus, which was when the resurrected Jesus was taken up to heaven in his resurrected body, (Acts 1:9-11) in the presence of eleven of his Apostles, occurring 40 days after the resurrection.
The church on Analipsi “???????” (Ascension) was build during the 50’s by the volunteer help and donations of the people of Arillas. Since then, we established the Arillas Analipseos Festival which is always on a Thursday 39 days after the Greek Easter Sunday.
The event starts at about 20:00  until late in the night.
The Festival is organized by non profitable organizations based in Arillas those who are responsible for the Wine Festival in September and the Music festival in July or August. The Arillas Folklore dancing club is consisted by over 60 members from the ages of 5 to 60 years old . Every time they dance you can experience these different traditional Greek dances performed by this mixture of ages all with the same pride, something that we do not see any more in many countries.
The music from the Traditional  Live Band is combined with some BBQ with souvlakis , wine and loads of our Local Corfu Beer from our unique Microbrewery'. This information was taken from www.arillas.com.

19 deg at 9am. This morning Joy and Cliff came to visit us for a coffee and we decided to go to Akrotari for lunch – unfortunately the weather took a turn for the worse and it started raining while we were there so no photos were taken. It continued to rain for the rest of the afternoon. This evening Cliff and Joy invited us to join them for dinner – another perfect Arillas evening! Rounded off by having drinks with Gill and Nigel too. The rain continued quite heavily and Kostas told me the Festival was cancelled.

This was some Sand Art on Arillas beach today. Someone has lots of patience.

The end of our eighth week – time is flying by so fast now!

The Seventh Week

Day 47- Friday 16.5.14

Nice morning – quite warm. We decided to go to Triadelphia for lunch, on the way to Beretta's supermarket. It was very quiet there but they would not let us take Poppy to an outside table. That is the first time she has been refused, we don't expect to take her inside but I cant see what harm it would have done, especially as we were the only people there. Had a few drinks in the Marvel with the gang this afternoon. Then we went home and had Spag Bol for dinner.

Day 48 – Saturday 17.5.14

Lovely day, but it had rained earlier this morning. My lovely friend Ann JP cut my hair this morning – nice and tidy again. I did some ironing as Phil was running out of shirts, pity there is no ironing fairy here. Then we walked down to Sharon's pool bar for lunch. Good crowd there including Dave Smith who was given a lolly by a little boy wearing a fantastic T shirt.

We were invited to take part in a pool match this evening at the Rainbow – 5€ to enter – winner takes it all. There were 8 of us, I was a bit apprehensive as I have not played for a few years. I was drawn against Anne Byrne for the first round. Luckily for me,  Anne potted the black on about her third shot – so I was through to round 2. I played against Paul Draper and he wiped the floor with me. It was a good laugh and Paul went on to win, then promptly spent most of his winnings on a round of drinks. We had a fabulous meal and then went to the Marvel for a nightcap and we were joined by Paul, Tracey and Arthur.

Day 49 – Sunday 18.5.14                         Half way through our trip today!

Beautiful sunny day. We walked down to the beach and went to Gratsella Taverna for lunch.. We met Dennis Up and Martin W off the forum site. Martin was having a drink with Viv Middleton.

Wonderful view
Our lunch at Gratsella

Poppy made friends with a cute little dog while we were there.

A new statue has appeared on the sea front
she looks a bit white – will be better with a tan.

Called at the Coconut on the way back and had a chat with Kostas, Paul Davo and Vicky. We stopped in tonight and had Chicken, chips and Greek salad.

Beautiful Sunset tonight!

Day 50 – Monday 19.5.14                        33 years today since my dad died – still miss him

Very cloudy today but 18 deg + The internet was down again! We have some more neighbours now and Phil thinks they are using all the band width. Caught up with some financial stuff and wrote my blog today as we haven't seen the sun all day. This evening we went to Thalassa and had a wonderful meal – it is one of our favourite places to eat. For starters we shared Tzatziki and Saganaki, for my main I had Fillets of Sole with an Ouzo and cream sauce, served with the most creamy mashed potato I have ever had. Both my sons would approve, they hate lumpy or fake mash. Phil had Lamb chops with a honey and balsamic sauce with home made chips. We both had Lemon pie for dessert. Washed down with a gorgeous white wine served in elegant glasses.

Called in at the Coconut for one on the way up.
When we are walking up the hill I love the sight of the Green tree at the Marvel,  it means we are almost home.
Day 51 – Tuesday 20.5.14

Beautiful day, hot and sunny 24 deg by lunchtime. We popped down to the Horizon to see our friend Janis and her family. It was a bit emotional as it was the first time we had seen her since Barry died. I am so pleased she decided to come to Arillas, it must be very hard for her to go to all the places they went to together. She is one brave, sensible lady and asked us not to be sad for her so we sat and chatted about some of the good memories we have. Janis was a bit worried that people would think it was too soon after the funeral to go away, I don't, I told her she can grieve anywhere so why not here with so many of their friends. We met Geoff Seddon for the first time, we have spoken on the internet several times. He is building a house in Dafni on Corfu, it has been 12 years in the building. He is due to retire soon and will realise his dream.

On the way to the vets. We drove to Roda for a late lunch,  Lovely spot with a good view.

The mountains in the background are Albania

We drove on past Roda and stopped to admire this lovely view, towards Kassiopi.

We drove back to the vets at Roda for Poppy to be clipped. Her rash has cleared up, but the vet, Matoula, thinks that it will be more comfortable for Poppy to be shorn as she will dry quicker when she has been swimming. The vet's 14 year old son says she is a summer dog now! When you stroke her it feels like velvet. One good thing has come out of this, Poppy has a nodule on her leg which should not be there, so she has made us promise to keep an eye on it and if it gets any bigger it needs investigating. We would not have known about it if she had not had this drastic haircut as it is not in a place where you would stroke her.

We were all tired when we got back, and it was still 18.3 deg at 9pm.

Day 52 – Wednesday 21.5.14

Awoke to another sunny day and it is still 18.3 deg at 9am.

Today is Kostas name day, Kronia Polla Kostas, the Greeks make more of their name days than their actual birthdays – many cakes and presents were visible. This cake was for Kostas at the Coconut.
We went down to take Poppy for her first swim for a week – she loved it again. Then we went to Sharon's pool bar for lunch and to take part in an Animal Charity quiz. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon and as usual the quiz was such a good laugh. There were about 40 of us taking part, our team was, Phil, Kes, Paul, Kath and I. Our team name was 'Two hats are us' (say it quickly). Dave Smith was an excellent quizmaster, he kept the crowd in order – well almost. Our friends Joan and John have arrived in Arillas with some of their family, it was lovely to see them again.
We bought a takeaway Gyros for our meal tonight and took it back to the apartment. Later we went for a goodbye drink with Sue and Paul, but we missed them they had already gone to bed as it was an early flight. We did see Sue and Eric who have arrived at the Rainbow so we stood and chatted to them. Then over to the Marvel for a nightcap and Phil had a game of darts which he won. It was 19.7 deg at 9pm.
Day 53 – Thursday 22.5.14

Glorious day again, wall to wall blue sky. 19.1 deg at 9am.

We decided to go swimming – first time in the sea since we arrived.

These photos were taken on the walk, a nude lady and some artistic stones.

The water was cool at first but once in, it was great. We hoped Poppy would come swimming with us – but as soon as she got out of her depth she turned round and went back and laid on the beach guarding our towels and watching us.

When we went to lay down on our towels, she wanted to play and kept finding sticks and laying them across Phil's feet he had quite a pile of them.

This evening we went to Thalassa for Kes and Kath's last supper before they fly back to UK.

We had a lovely evening, sat and watched the sun go down, good food, wine and friends. Perfect!

Sole in Ouzo and cream sauce

We ended a perfect evening with a nightcap back at the Marvel with Kes, Paul, Tracey, Arthur and Kostas – until 4am.

The end of another perfect week in paradise.

The Sixth Week

Day 40 – Friday 9.5.14

Beautiful day again to wake up to, weather has warmed up very nicely now. No more jumpers! We went down to the beach for Poppy to have her daily dip.

Sharons pool bar is up and running now and the '4 o'clock club' was in full flow, a little bit early. I finally met Dave Smith who introduced my grand-daughters to the 4 o'clock club last year. Emily is officially the youngest member.

Then spent a very happy couple of hours with Eileen and Keith at Villa Linakis – it is so beautiful – such a tranquil setting.

 Nice wine too!

It was lovely hearing the story of how it came about. They are very pleased to have bookings for the whole of the Summer up to September.

We went for a Pizza tonight and then back to the Marvel for a nightcap and a piece of Apple Pie.

Phil played Darts – he won so was a happy bunny.

Day 41 – Saturday 10.5.14              9am and the temperature is 18.4deg C

Kato Savatokiriako = Happy weekend. I am trying to learn a few more Greek words – other than Yiamas = cheers and Efharisto = thank you.
We went to the Marvel while Vasso cleaned and watched Kath and Ann swimming in the very cold pool. Then walked down to the beach for Poppy to have her swim we joined in with the 4 o'clock club. I had 'my first of the season'  piece of Sharon's delicious Lemon cake. There were 10 of us at one point. This evening we went to the Marvel to watch the Eurovision Song Contest – what was that all about?

We drowned our sorrows with a boozy coffee and Chocolate cake to share.

Day 42 – Sunday 11.5.14

When I got up my feet were swollen, haven't had that for a while as I have been  elevating my feet in bed but stopped a few days ago – must restart! Poppy and I were home alone as Phil went to watch the Grand Prix with Spiros at the Marvel. So I had a bit of a pamper. Poor Poppy has a rash on her tummy. I think she may have to go to the vets. We didn't take her swimming today. Went to Mon Amour for dinner, with Kes, Kath, Ann and John. I do like going there because they pick you up and drop you off – I don't have to drive.
Day 43 – Monday 12.5.14

Sun is still shining beautifully – usually 18 deg in the morning rising to 24-25 in the afternoon – 19 deg at 9pm. We cant complain about that! We went down to Sharon's for lunch and to find out the details for the Vet in Roda as Poppy still has her rash and is scratching it quite a lot. We drove to Roda and found the vets easily so we sat and had a fresh orange juice in the sun, at a Taverna opposite the vets, while we waited for opening time. The vet is called Antonogeorgou Matoula – everyone calls her Matoula – she is really lovely and thorough. She is not sure what has caused it – some sort of allergic reaction, maybe from a sand fly, which has got infected or it could be from being damp for a long while.. So she dabbed it with some stuff which looks like Iodine, then rubbed some cream on it, gave her an antihistamine injection and also some antibiotic tablets. No swimming for a week, we have to go back next Tuesday for her to be checked and she will groom her at the same time. We are all quite tired today so we stayed home this evening, I cooked Chicken and chips for dinner.
Day 44 – Tuesday 13.5.14

Woke to wall to wall clouds this morning – but it is still nice and warm 19 deg and not at all breezy.

We went for a walk and had a chat to Perry in the Coconut, then Eggy came and joined us. He was looking for a game of darts but was disappointed as Perry is making a new cabinet, and had removed the board. While we were sat there we spotted this wonderful bit of parking.

We were going to go to see the Splinter band tonight, but just as we finished our dinner it started to rain so we changed our minds and stayed home.

Day 45 – Wednesday 14.5.14

Sunshine and showers forecast for today. Phil said there was a thunder storm in the night, but I didn't hear it.

Elegant wine glasses at Ammos

We walked down to Ammos for our lunch, it was really windy and there were some big waves breaking over the bench.

Dimitris at Brouklis makes me laugh, he spotted us reading the Menu board outside the taverna, and said 'stop looking – that is for tourists' meaning we have been here a long time!

I love taking photos of all the beautiful flowers in bloom!

Angels' Trumpet Yellow (Brugmansia suaveolens
Pretty pink and white roses

Day 45 – Thursday 15.5.14

We woke up to no water or internet this morning, apparently the overnight storms knocked one of the phases out – so no pump for water. All restored by 10.30am though 🙂

Very sad day today it is our friend Barry's funeral. Even though I am in Arillas my heart and head, are in Yorkshire with Janis. I lit my Infinity candle at 13.15 because we never forget the ones we love!
Lazy afternoon because I had a headache – went for a snooze.

Tonight we went to the Rainbow to see 'The Worried Men' with Ann and Keith Marshall. We had a great time, good company, nice food, excellent wine. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Phil, Keith, Ann and Anne

Worried Men
Rainbow's fountain

Well the end of another week, we are almost halfway through our trip now.  114 days without a cigarette.

The Fifth Week.

Day 33 – Friday 2.5.14

Beautiful sunny, hot day! Lots of walking today. First to have a coffee and say hello to Jimmy in Rainbow on his opening day. Then on to visit Georgia in the New Silver Moon shop. Popped into the Coconut and said hello to Kostas, Perry, Maria and Yiota – they were very busy getting ready for their opening tomorrow night. Said hello to Vas at the Marina, working very hard. We walked to both ends of the beach today and Poppy had lots of swims. We had lunch at the Beachpoint then back to upload some photos for my blog. This evening we walked down to Portofino for Spiros'  opening night. My grilled lambs liver was to die for. We walked past the Coconut at about midnight and the boys were still working.
Day 34 – Saturday 3.5.14
Dull and cloudy start to the day, we drove down to Sharon's pool bar as she had very kindly got us some dog food from her supplier. Phil mended her table while we were there. I called in at Yiotas shop and bought some Lemon marmalade, looking forward to breakfast tomorrow. Then we went for a drive up to Afionas to have a look at a property we fancied buying a few years ago, thinking it would be a lovely villa now, but no – it is still a wreck.

Had lunch in the Marvel while Vasso cleaned for us. I was reading the cocktails menu and spotted 'Bloody tourist' – that's what Spiros calls us – but he does love us. I think I may have to try one – it sounds interesting.

When we got back Phil decided to put the awning up on the side of Mercy. Eileen and Keith came to visit us, just as the heavens opened so we all dove into the campervan and spent a pleasant afternoon drinking wine and putting the world to rights. they have guests going into their beautiful villa next Saturday and are driving round trying to find an apartment to rent without much luck.

http://www.villalinakis.com

Tonight we were going to the opening of the Coconut but it was cold and wet so we decided to stay in.
Day 35 – Sunday 4.5.14

Had a very sad start to the day, our friend Janis messaged me to say that her husband, Barry had passed away at 4am. He was diagnosed with Cancer on 7th February. We have had some good times with them, both in Arillas and the UK He was a lovely fellow and will be greatly missed, especially by Janis – he was the love of her life. Sweet dreams Barry – out of pain now.

What a funny day, started off cloudy, then thunder and the heavens opened and now it is sunny. We walked down to the beach for Poppy to have her swim.I love this photo, all the different colours of the sea and the cloud formation.

This evening we had a meal in Brouklis, Meze and Galactabourika. Then we went over to the Coconut for a nightcap with Eileen, Keith and Anne. Hannah was there briefly, but was sent home to put her feet up – she only has about a month to go before her baby girl is born. We met Hannah's replacement, Vicky, she is Russian and has a lovely smile. I am sure she will fit in beautifully.

Day 36 – Monday 5.5.14

Sunny but windy today.

We went over to the Rainbow for lunch and were there to greet some more friends, John and Dot, who arrived this afternoon. Phil took Poppy down to the beach while I had a siesta as I had, had a bad night. We have more friends arriving tonight, our next door neighbours Ann and John, also Kes and Kath who are staying at the Marvel. We popped over to welcome them and had a quick nightcap and catchup as we missed them last year. The lovely thing about friends like these is – that you carry on where you left off!

Day 37 – Tuesday 6.5.14

Beautiful blue sky – 18° – before lunch – it's a lovely day!

Walked down to the beach and had breakfast in Portofino – he does do a good one!

We had a long play with Poppy – she did lots of swimming. Came back and had a siesta, then I made Greek Salad for dinner, with some things Yiota had picked out of her garde. It was gorgeous and I made a lemon/olive oil dressing to go with it – we seem to have lots of lemons.

Tuesday 9:00 PM 16.9°C Humidity:72 1.0 ENE 1018.5 hpa Sunset at:9:00 PM Dry

Day 38 – Wednesday 7.5.14
18° and very sunny when I woke up. Apparently there was an earthquake during the night, I didn't hear it – one of the joys of being deaf :-). We had a lazy day today as the temperature rose to a lovely 24°, went over to the Marvel for a drink with Kes, Kath, John, Ann and Spiros. Then we all walked down to the Akti hotel, where Kes and John had a Table tennis match. We stayed home tonight.

Day 39 – Thursday 8.5.14

19° and very sunny when I woke up quickly rose to 21 by lunch time. We decided to have a drive to Sidari for lunch and shopping today. We stopped off at a taverna right on the waters edge, it was their first day of opening for the season and only had drinks no food. I asked if he minded us eating our own food, and I went off and bought us a Chicken Gyros. Very pleasant sat in the sunshine watching the world go by and chatting to others in the Taverna. After shopping, we took Poppy down for her swim and walk – the temperature had risen to 26 by this time. Back for a shower and then I drove us all up to the Night Owl for dinner. Food was superb as usual and Petros had baked Brownies very nice too.

I love the sign above the door – OPEN most of the time. CLOSED some of the time.

Parking Greek style!

Well we have come to the end of our Fifth week – each one has been so different, we are loving our life, especially now the weather has warmed up considerably. We are certainly living our dream!

The Fourth Week.

Day 26 – Friday 25.4.14
A beautiful day today, sunny and warm. Such a change from yesterday.  We decided to have a mooch round Sidari and to try and find the place we stayed at 20 odd years ago when the place was a sleepy little fishing village. No luck, it has grown so much, there has been so much development that it proved impossible. We do not like Sidari now, much too busy and one road is just wall to wall bars and restaurants. We struggled to find a 'Greek' restaurant open and settled for  a cafe where we had a 'Full English' and very nice it was too. We shopped for our essentials, water etc. then drove back to our lovely little Arillas for Poppy to have a run and swim. There were quite a few people on the beach enjoying the late afternoon sunshine.
Sad night tonight, we went to the Marvel to say goodbye to Bob and Nicola they are on a late flight back to the UK. Bob says he has done lots of writing while he has been here, so we can look forward to his new book very soon, we can't wait for it and hope it is as good as his others, which I am sure it will be.

Day 27 – Saturday 26.4.14     Beach cleaning day!
Lots of locals, Greeks, English and others descended on the beach to help tidy it up before the influx of visitors. We helped, as did Poppy, she was a great help collecting sticks between swims. She is getting very brave and goes further out now she has got used to the waves – talking of which – I found the following on the Arillas Forum and found it interesting:-

The size of the beach in Arillas Corfu
The size of the sandy  beach of Arillas is different almost  every day. It all depends on the current of the sea and the direction of the wind which moves the waves.
Sand is a liquid element with specific dynamic.
The shape of the beach depends on whether or not the waves are constructive or destructive.
Constructive waves move sand up the beach while destructive waves move the sand down the beach.
If the wind is from the south then the waves move the sand towards the sea resulting to a decrease of the width of our beach. When the wind blows from the north , then  it moves the sand out of the water making the beach wider. Three days of north west wind ( Maistro ) can give us a width up to 2 meters a day.
This is why most of you who regularly return to Arillas  are most of the times surprised by the shape of our beach .The beach profile changes seasonally due to the change in wave energy experienced during summer and winter months. It  is higher during the summer due to the gentle wave action during this season. Conversely, the beach profile is lower in the winter due to the increased wave energy associated with storms'

Painted pebbles.

As I was picking up litter, I found these 3 painted pebbles, I placed them on a flower bed. Someone has taken a lot of trouble to paint them, I wonder who!

Surfing

Poppy is getting more adventurous with the waves and is  surfing some of them.

The people of Arillas do take pride in their village, there is a great community spirit here and they do a lot to make the place attractive. One example of this is a  few years ago when we came we found they had been re-cycling cans – big time! This was the result – no longer here now they were replaced with permanent bins.

The notice says 'We do recycling for our environment – nothing goes to waste'

When we got back from the beach Vasso came to clean, her hubby Yannis came with her and walked me round the garden, and told me the names of some of the plants. He assures me the Loquats/Nespoless will be good to eat in a weeks time. We have a Peach Tree with lots of fruit on it, a Pomegranate tree, a Red Olive tree, lots of lemon and orange trees. A satsuma, and a Seville orange tree to make jam with – not for eating. Also the most gorgeous Bottle Brush tree – Callistemon.

Day 28 – Sunday 27.4.14

This morning it was warm and sunny, but we heard a few rumbles of thunder. Luckily it did not rain and it turned out to be a glorious day, lots of lovely warm sunshine. We walked down to the beach and had a lovely long walk and play.

Mesembryanthemums on way down to beach

 Walking down!

A few years ago a restaurant owner, (Kostas on the beach), and friend to many people died at a very young age (40 something). We have a group on Facebook and Arillas.com, of friends who are regulars to Arillas, we were all devastated to hear the sad news about Kostas and we decided to purchase a bench in his memory. This we did and it is placed on the jetty every Spring and put in storage for the Winter, today was the day it was re-installed in its place, therefore we had to go and sit on it. We met our friend Ann Stewart, who had just returned from the UK, you can see her in the background walking down the jetty to say hello, she has invited us up to her and Roger's house to see her chicks.

While we were walking along the beach we got to the place where the stream joins the sea – and found a tiny turtle being washed down and out to sea.

Baby Turtle

This evening we fancied a Pizza so we walked down to Pizzeria Lithero, and very nice it was too, all cooked in a wood burning oven. We had Saganaki and stuffed peppers for starters, which we shared. Then an amazing Chicken Pizza all washed down with a jug of local red wine. Excellent value for money. Vasilis the chef is a showman, we enjoyed watching him prepare the food, with his little twirls, flick of the wrist to flour the counter and everytime he took a pizza out of the oven he spun the huge spatula. Entertainment as well! We walked back up to the Marvel for a nightcap, and lo and behold the waiter who had just served our meal arrived with a takeaway order for Kostas and his friends at the bar. If the locals eat the food, you know it is good.

Day 29 – Monday 28.4.14

It rained quite heavily in the night, and this morning it is cloudy, cool 13 deg and persisting down – might have to get some turtles for the puddles in the garden. We stayed in all day, I made a nice Chicken Curry for dinner and did a lot of reading.

Day 30 – Tuesday 29.4.14        Andy's 42nd birthday!

There are so many birthdays today, Andy, Dot, William, Karen and Stella. It was pouring down with rain again, up to about 4pm. We had a good internet signal today therefore I did some reviews of books I have read on Amazon and also ordered some items for our friends Kes and Kath to bring out with them next week. We had a drive up to the supermarket and then took Poppy down to the beach to catch the early evening sunshine. She is loving the water and was jumping off the jetty to chase her ball. We were most impressed when she stood on the waters edge and had a wee. Beach front is looking really good, lots of new plants and some new benches have appeared. The locals are frantically getting their places ready – it seems most places are opening on 1st/2nd May. I made Spaghetti Bolognaise for tea with home made Garlic bread.

Day 31 – Wednesday 30.4.14

We woke to lovely sunshine today, but it had rained heavily in the night.

Loquats
Front garden

The gardener came and cut the front grass, he picked some Loquats/Nespoles for me and I gave him a Mythos.

We decided to have a drive to Corfu town today, we wanted some bits from Lidl and to visit Jumbo for the first time. It is a huge 2 story store, took us ages to have a look round, some very unusual items there. Almost like Woolworths/Wilko rolled into one.
When we got back we went down to the beach for Poppy to have a run, we walked towards the North End. We were surprised to see that the old wooden steps have been replaced with a very smart looking ramp, again the locals have been very busy over the winter. The sunset tonight was lovely. Poppy did another wee on the waters edge, she is getting good at it, I suppose it is like me, when I hear running water, I want one too.

Day 32 – Thursday 1.4.14

100 days without a cigarette for me today!
1st May is a bank holiday here, apparently all the supermarkets are closed, but most of the tavernas and restaurants are opening for the new season.

Greece celebrates Spring… the Festival of Flowers. Protomagia!!! That is the name of this celebration  Our friend Sara picked wild flowers from along her track and made this beautiful wreath.

We had a drive into San Stefanos today, we drove down to the Port and the beach – here are some photos we took.

We visited our friend Yiota's new shop – very nice it is too, so spacious!

Then we went for a coffee and took Poppy for a run on the beach. On the way back into Arillas we spotted the new sign which has been erected at the edge of the village.

Armourada for dinner tonight, we decided to have Saganaki between us for starters. We asked Leon how big they were, so he got his pen out and drew the size on the tablecloth. Only in Arillas! It was much bigger than he drew though.
